CAN supervise abseil down Town House in support of veterans

CAN (Offshore) coordinated an abseil down the Aberdeen Town House in celebration of the Veterans Day parade held in Aberdeen on 28 June 2008.

Respect to the veterans was made in dramatic fashion with the abseil of cadets from the Officers Training Corp (OTC) down the side of the Town House whilst a smoke grenade detonated and a RAF Nimrod flew overhead.

CAN (Offshore) were asked to supervise and project manage the abseil because of their expertise in rope access. CAN are a global leading engineering and inspection company, but rope access is essentially still core to the services we offer. Ian Somers, Manager CAN Offshore's Rope Access & Trades Division, and Senior Project Engineer Mark Leaper provided the equipment and supervised the abseil of the cadets in accordance with IRATA regulations. Mark, qualified to Rope Access Level 3, successfully coordinated the cadets descent 105ft down the building, negotiating windows and contending with the poor weather conditions, in time to meet the veterans marching proudly past the building and saluting the Lord Provost.

Neil Jamieson, from CAN Offshore’s Rope Access & Trades Division, was also involved on the day, leading the entire veteran’s parade as the Senior Drum Major for the Aberdeen Officers Training Corp.

The veterans parade was a great success and CAN (Offshore) were glad to play their part in coordinating the safe abseil down one of Aberdeen’s most attractive and historic buildings.
