Geotechnical Services

A scarcity of greenfield locations has led to the development of exhausted quarries as industrial, housing and landfill sites: cuttings and embankments are designed with steeper gradients as highways are widened within current land boundaries: existing roads require on-going maintenance as stability problems become manifest: the continuing erosion of Britain's coastline and the attendant safety issues have gained a high profile.

Many of the above scenarios entail working in poor ground conditions. They demand innovation to generate economically viable stabilisation solutions. Since 1983 CAN Geotechnical have provided a range of services for the stabilisation of rock faces, soil slopes and retaining walls. All of our engineers have been trained in industrial rope access techniques and therefore our services are particularly pertinent to situations where ground conditions are poor or where access is restricted at toe or crest. We have also developed and adapted drilling rigs, self-stabilising platforms and other equipment to work in environments where traditional methods of access are impractical.

Soil Nails

Soil nails offer a cost-effective method of stabilising high angle soil slopes. CAN is one of the most experienced contactors in the field having installed monobar, fibre glass and Ischebeck soil nails.

Sprayed Concrete

Sprayed concrete may be specified to stabilise rock faces prone to rapid weathering or requiring structural support. Wet or dry processes are used in accordance with the client's specification and, where necessary, steel or fibre particles added to increase strength. Pigments may also be added to improve the match with surrounding rock or masonary. All CAN's nozzle men have CITB accreditation

Rock Netting

Many solutions provided by CAN are non-structural. They aim purely at increasing the safety of a site. We use steel mesh and polymer geogrids to retain potentially hazardous loose rock. In certain locations we also install rock catch fences to protect buildings and roads below the rock face.
