Celebrating International Women's Day

International Women's Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year’s theme is #breakthebias and in support of this, Gillian Farrell, CAN Group’s QHSE & Compliance director, reflects on her journey and shares why it’s so important to continue the conversation to help break down the barriers for all.

Gillian said: "Today on International Women’s Day it has made me reflect on my journey, where I am at today and I think it’s important to celebrate the achievements of all women and keep talking about bias to break down the barriers not just for women but for all.

Looking back I come from a long line of strong, empowered women – my Granny who when widowed in her mid-30s in the 1960s with 3 young children was told ‘a women can never run a farm’ and she did and it flourished.  My mother & sister who also work in the male-dominated agricultural industry – which I am also pleased to see is starting to embrace change on the diversity front too.

When I started out in health and safety in the Oil & Gas Industry some 20+ years ago, I was always the only female in the room.  I have been belittled on occasion and spoken down to and even ignored with conversations being directed instead solely to my male counterparts.  If anything, it has made me stronger and more determined to achieve, have a voice and showcase my ability but hopefully with compassion and understanding.  Today, I am delighted much more even splits of all genders in O&G and the Health & Safety arena.  Most important for me, is that people are recognised for being good at what they do with equal opportunities provided for all - no matter your gender, age or race. Its recognising that everyone has a part to play.

I didn’t get where I am today on my own and its important I recognise the men too who have supported me in my journey to-date: my Dad for encouraging me to work hard, my husband Oliver – who I couldn’t have gotten where I am today without his constant support, he is my biggest supporter and a great role model for our son.  Also to Mike Freeman, Innes Walker and Adam Byrne at CAN; and to my QHSE Team (60% female) and Training & Competency Team (100% female) and to all the people who I am proud to class as my family, friends and colleagues who are also championing equality.

I hope to show my daughter and nieces that we can all accomplish our goals and dreams no matter what they are.  Together we can breakdown the stereotypes for them to be given the opportunity to be successful in whatever they choose to do."

Happy International Women’s Day.
