CANdid Conversations: Leum Renney – Remote Visual Inspection

Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) solutions are continuing to transform how industries monitor, assess, and maintain critical assets more safely and efficiently. From reducing downtime to streamlining traditional inspection programs, RVI is helping to reshape asset management across multiple industries.

We recently caught up with our RVI specialist, Leum Renney, who shared valuable insights into how CAN’s RVI service offering continues to optimise operational efficiency for our clients, with continued investment in its RVI portfolio.

Leum explains “RVI is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to visually examine areas that are difficult or unsafe to access directly. It typically involves using specialised tools from the more traditional systems such as cameras and borescopes to more advanced robotic systems to inspect and assess the condition of plant and equipment, structures or confined spaces. These methods significantly improve operational efficiencies by leveraging advanced imaging technologies, robotics, and data-driven analytics.

“Adopting RVI strategies, as part of wider inspection programmes, can help organisations operate smarter.  Technologies such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle’s (UAV) and robotic crawlers reduce the need for personnel to enter hazardous areas, promoting smarter, safer and a more efficient way to gather critical asset information.

“CAN’s RVI service offering goes beyond capturing images, it's delivering insights that drive informed decisions to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of asset integrity management and risk-based Inspection programs. Our people powered innovation means we embrace new technologies and deliver expert-led solutions, safely and with integrity, to help enhance asset performance and reliability.”

Leum explains how CAN’s approach adds further value to our clients:
“Searches online will show that there are many companies who offer RVI services.  For CAN, the differentiator is more than just capability in a standalone service. With nearly 40 years as market leaders in NDT, Inspection, and Integrity solutions, these services are not just part of CAN’s offering - they’re the foundation of the business. Our experience, rigorous processes and procedures, multi-skilled teams and global reach provides our clients with the assurance of more than just a technical service.

“Often the question is, once these types of inspections have been conducted, what is next? Through CAN Group’s extensive service offering, we can further interrogate data and provide integrity solutions to support the full asset life cycle, such as remedying all repair and maintenance requirements.”
The oil and gas industry is  continually evolving and at CAN, our agility allows us to adapt and align with the environment in which we operate within.

Leum adds: “Over the years, our RVI capabilities have transformed — not just through technological innovation, but through a strategic response to our clients’ evolving needs across safety, cost, efficiency, compliance, and data-driven decision-making.

“Most recently, we have made significant advancements with data digitisation and how we present data to our clients, this includes 3D photogrammetry, Digital Twin Modelling and AI embedded reporting and analytical projects. Additionally, with environmental impacts being a key topic globally, we have incorporated Aerial Emissions surveys into our UAV capabilities through industry collaboration and partnership.”

The CAN Group of companies has continued to invest in the latest technology, currently operating a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), including collision tolerant variants with customisable NDT capability (currently operating the largest and most active fleet of Elios 3 UAVs across the energy sector globally), submersible Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV), subsea deployable camera systems and much more.

Whether supporting oil & gas assets, power generation infrastructure, or civil engineering projects, CAN’s RVI offering excels through a unique blend of innovation, experienced personnel, and a commitment to evolve, ensuring we meet the needs of our clients.
