Turnaround CAD Drafter - Angola

The CAN Group of companies are leading providers in Engineering, Integrity, Inspection and Maintenance solutions to the energy industry worldwide.

We are seeking a Turnaround (TA) CAD Drafter to support turnaround planning and execution, based onshore in Cabinda, Angola working on a 28/28 rotational basis.

The Turnaround (TA) Drafter plays a pivotal role in ensuring the technical accuracy and readiness of piping design documentation required to support turnaround planning and execution. The position is responsible for translating field conditions and engineering requirements into precise, constructible design drawings and isometrics to support turnaround work packs and execution deliverables.

Working closely with turnaround Engineers, Planners, and Construction teams, the TA Drafter conducts detailed offshore field walkdowns to verify existing conditions, capture accurate measurements, and identify modification scope items. Using AutoCAD and established client drafting standards, the role develops and maintains piping isometric, spool, and layout drawings that comply with all relevant codes and specifications.

By maintaining a strong interface between engineering design, field data, and planning documentation, the TA Drafter directly supports safe, efficient, and technically sound turnaround delivery while upholding CAN’s standards of quality, compliance, and continual improvement.

This position bridges field realities with engineering deliverables, providing the technical drawing and documentation expertise required for planning, fabrication, and field installation during turnaround campaigns.

Key Responsibilities-

  • Conduct detailed field walkdowns to verify existing conditions and identify scope items requiring design or modification.
  • Capture accurate field measurements, routing information, and tie-in locations.
  • Produce clear, dimensionally accurate field sketches and maintain photographic records.
  • Develop and update piping isometric drawings, spool sheets and layout drawings (using AutoCAD) for fabrication and installation, ensuring clarity and constructability.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards, safety regulations, and offshore facility requirements in all design and drafting activities.
  • Create or revise design drawings to reflect as-built conditions and planned modifications.
  • Maintain drawing revision control and ensure all updates are properly documented and communicated to relevant stakeholders.
  • Incorporate mark-ups and redlines from engineers, planners, and field leads into final design packages.
  • Prepare, review, and issue drawing packages, material lists, and isometric indexes in support of turnaround work packs.
  • Collaborate with planners and engineers to ensure all design deliverables align with project execution strategy and timelines.
  • Support the updating of as-built drawings after execution to maintain accurate plant documentation.
  • Record and track isolation progress status during pre-turnaround and execution phases, ensuring accurate documentation and communication with the planning team
  • Participate in constructability reviews and field coordination meetings.
  • Assist in the development of work packs by providing accurate and detailed piping drawings and documentation:
  • Support material take-offs (MTOs) and bill of materials (BOMs) based on finalised drawings to assist procurement and construction planning.
  • Adhere to client drafting procedures, document control standards, and QA/QC requirements.
  • Promote and demonstrate safe working practices during field visits and data collection.
  • Support lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives following each turnaround.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting & Design Technology, or related technical discipline is preferred (but not essential).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with 3D plant design software (e.g., AutoPlant, PDMS, or Plant3D).
  • 5+ years’ experience in piping design, drafting, or mechanical layout within the oil & gas or petrochemical industry.
  • Previous experience supporting turnaround, shutdown, or brownfield modification projects.
  • Proven ability to conduct field walkdowns and translate site information into accurate design drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of piping systems, materials, isometric interpretation, and fabrication drawings.
  • Ability to read and produce P&IDs, general arrangements, and isometric drawings.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities under turnaround time pressures.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in Angolan or West African offshore/onshore oil & gas operations is an advantage.
  • Ability to mentor junior drafters or assist in developing local Angolan drafting capability.
